Whole House Reuse -the unique challenge of reusing an entire home to save it from waste

05 Jun to 23 Aug // Canterbury Museum

The unique challenge of reusing an entire house to save it from waste has formed the basis for a new and inspiring exhibition called Whole House Reuse to open at Canterbury Museum on 5 June 2015. The project involved reusing every single piece of 19 Admirals Way – a 1920’s weatherboard home in New Brighton, Christchurch – which was scheduled for demolition in 2013. Since then, over 250 people from around New Zealand and the world have invented ways of reusing these resources and the result is a huge collection of objects from a delicately carved taonga puoro (flute) by master carver Brian Flintoff, to a finely crafted backyard studio by artist Nic Moon and architectural designer Lyn Russell. Visit www.wholehousereuse.co.nz for more information and tickets to this unique opportunity. Further exhibition and public programme information can be found at www.canterburymuseum.com

Reading to Dogs

Various library venues and the times depend on the library

A ‘fur-tastic’ programme for growing readers! Christchurch City Libraries ‘Reading to Dogs’ programme is designed to provide a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere which encourages children to practice their reading skills and develop a love of reading. The programme uses dogs who are now the beloved pets of the Christchurch City Council Animal Control team. These furry friends have all been trained and tested for health, safety and temperament. Our dogs: Can increase a child’s relaxation while reading; Listen attentively; Do not laugh, judge or criticise; Allow children to proceed at their own pace; Can be less intimidating than a child’s peers. Library staff and a dog handler will be present at all times to help facilitate the sessions. Each session is 15 minutes long. Don’t miss out on this fun programme! Please call: 941 7923 or book at South Christchurch Library.
