Vintage Ploughing Compeitions

23-24 May  // 10 – 2pm // Two Chain Rd

Annual ploughing matches for 2015 will be held on Two Chain Road, Swannanoa on the north bank of the Eyre River, on May 23/24th weather permitting from 10am to 2pm. Saturday: Oxford WMC Vintage Section & Sunday: North Canterbury Ploughing Match Assn. Competitive ploughing involves three categories: Vintage ploughing – single & double furrow ploughs; Horse team ploughing – teams of 2 to 6 horses; Silver Plough  – modern reversible and conventional. Ploughmen range from the novice to world ploughing competitors. Meet the ploughmen from throughout Canterbury and Marlborough, practicing the ancient skill of ploughing the land to expose the soil to the elements over the winter season in preparation for spring sowing of crops – before the days of spray and chemicals. Bring a thermos and enjoy the day. Sorry, no dogs permitted on this property.

 

Sri Chinmoy 10km, 5km and Children’s 2.5km Races in Sumner

24 May  // 9am // Esplanade

Location: Registration area is at the far end of Sumner Esplanade by the clock tower. Course: a flat accurate 2.5km out-and-back along the lovely oceanside esplanade. Registration opens at 8:15am. Event Options: 10km (15yrs+), 5km (13yrs +), 2.5km (under 15 yrs). All races are open. Medals are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each event. A post-race breakfast provided by The Lotus-Heart Restaurant is available from 9:30am. The meal is complimentary for all participants. Supporters are welcome to purchase breakfast for $7. Results, photos and a race report will be posted online after the event. The international Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team is a non-profit organisation conducted by the Sri Chinmoy Centre. The Famous Annual Sefton Tug of War

24 May  // 10-2pm // Sefton School

The Tug of War is a lot of fun events in one day. From the 760kg Trophy Class to the mixed class (no weight limit), it’s designed for team building and community involvement .  Kids love the Seftonian Battles, and this year Pedalmania will have their crazy collection of rideable bikes for you to have a go on. We encourage business to enter teamsfor the Trophy Pull, Mixed Pull or Truck Pull and reward competitiors with great competition and spot prizes. Food and drinks are available along with a Farmers Market and free kids entertainment. Spectators Free!  Team entry, $120. Official Website: Click here

Reading to Dogs

Each Wednesday  // 3:30 – 4:30pm // South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street, Cashmere

A ‘fur-tastic’ programme for growing readers! Christchurch City Libraries ‘Reading to Dogs’ programme is designed to provide a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere which encourages children to practice their reading skills and develop a love of reading. The programme uses dogs who are now the beloved pets of the Christchurch City Council Animal Control team. These furry friends have all been trained and tested for health, safety and temperament. Our dogs: Can increase a child’s relaxation while reading; Listen attentively; Do not laugh, judge or criticise; Allow children to proceed at their own pace; Can be less intimidating than a child’s peers. Library staff and a dog handler will be present at all times to help facilitate the sessions. Each session is 15 minutes long. Don’t miss out on this fun programme! New Zealand Dance Awards

29 May – 1 June  // Middleton Grange Theatre

The New Zealand Dance Awards provides a platform for our youth to express themselves through dance to a high standard. With Adjudicators from Australia and the USA  this years competition is shaping up to be one of the best yet! With over $7000.00 in Cash Prizes there are plenty of opportunities for dancers to be able to enhance their learning with one of the 9 Scholarship prizes on offer. Competing in the styles of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Musical Theatre to name but a few there will be up to 700 routines grace the stage over 3 1/2 days. Wacky Wednesday and Funday Friday!

Too rainy for sports? Need a break? Register the kids for Wacky Wednesday and Funday Friday! Drop the kids off at 4 and either hang around the enjoy our free wifi and coffee delivery, or head off to get things done. We will take take of everything! The kids will be entertained by our skilled Fun Team – providing them with building challenges, team work competitions and brain bending brick games. Registration includes a Mrs Higgins cookie, a drink and 90 minutes of fun!
