Halswell School Indoor Winter Carnival

1st June  // 11am – 3pm // Halswell School

Halswell School is hosting a Winter Carnival on Monday 1 June from 11am to 3pm as part of its 150th Jubilee Celebrations taking place over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The Carnival will be largely held indoors and feature games, craft stalls, food, raffles with great prizes as well as the usual stalls such as the white elephant. There will also be a magician show, interactive storytelling and loads of other fun entertainment. From 2pm – 3pm children can take part in Muddy Games on the field opposite the school for a gold coin donation. And if the weather holds out some bouncy castles and bungy trampolines will be available to work off some energy. The Winter Carnival will also act as an Open Day for Halswell School, which has just completed its rebuild. Members of the wider Christchurch community are invited to view the new school and modern learning environments and have any questions answered by members of the school staff. This year our Craft Stalls are available to rent for $25 by sellers of good quality products. New Zealand Dance Awards

29 May – 1 June  // Middleton Grange Theatre

The New Zealand Dance Awards provides a platform for our youth to express themselves through dance to a high standard. With Adjudicators from Australia and the USA  this years competition is shaping up to be one of the best yet! With over $7000.00 in Cash Prizes there are plenty of opportunities for dancers to be able to enhance their learning with one of the 9 Scholarship prizes on offer. Competing in the styles of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Musical Theatre to name but a few there will be up to 700 routines grace the stage over 3 1/2 days. First Thursdays: Paper, Scissors, Rock ‘n’ Roll

All of Christchurch is invited to Paper, Scissors, Rock ‘n’ Roll! – An evening which will unwrap art, music, night markets, gallery events, performances, exhibitions and the unexpected in Sydenham.Roshambo, ick-ack-ock, ching-chang-walla, whatever name you know it by, everybody can play the game. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. It’s simple! 1950s inspired, there will be some rock, a little bit of roll and we’ve gone all out paper crazy. From dancing to roller skating, whole wall paste-ups to live portrait painting, come and join us in making the start of winter a whole lot warmer! First Thursdays is a free arts and entertainment event for all ages, offering a new and exciting way to experience and celebrate our community while supporting local artists, businesses and art organisations. Taking place in Sydenham three times a year, First Thursdays is a worldwide movement bringing together music, markets, gallery events and artworks over one evening, offering something for all ages. Whether you’re an arts advocate or have never set foot in a gallery, First Thursdays is an evening to experience a variety of art; from performance to street art paste-ups, to celebrate Christchurch’s art galleries and explore Sydenham’s hidden gems. Christchurch Food Truck Market @ The Commons

Reading to Dogs

Each Wednesday  // 3:30 – 4:30pm // South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street, Cashmere

A ‘fur-tastic’ programme for growing readers! Christchurch City Libraries ‘Reading to Dogs’ programme is designed to provide a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere which encourages children to practice their reading skills and develop a love of reading. The programme uses dogs who are now the beloved pets of the Christchurch City Council Animal Control team. These furry friends have all been trained and tested for health, safety and temperament. Our dogs: Can increase a child’s relaxation while reading; Listen attentively; Do not laugh, judge or criticise; Allow children to proceed at their own pace; Can be less intimidating than a child’s peers. Library staff and a dog handler will be present at all times to help facilitate the sessions. Each session is 15 minutes long. Don’t miss out on this fun programme! Wacky Wednesday and Funday Friday!

Too rainy for sports? Need a break? Register the kids for Wacky Wednesday and Funday Friday! Drop the kids off at 4 and either hang around the enjoy our free wifi and coffee delivery, or head off to get things done. We will take take of everything! The kids will be entertained by our skilled Fun Team – providing them with building challenges, team work competitions and brain bending brick games. Registration includes a Mrs Higgins cookie, a drink and 90 minutes of fun!
