Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival 2015

4th – 8th March  // Hagley Park North

Te Matatini Kapa Haka Aotearoa and the Waitaha Cultural Council are proud to present Te Matatini 2015 – Christchurch. Every two years, Te Matatini organises the Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival, where top kapa haka teams from New Zealand and Australia compete for the honour of being crowned the best of the best. The festival started in 1972 and is now the world’s largest celebration of Māori traditional performing arts, attracting over 30,000 performers, supporters and visitors. The festival is a whānau friendly, smoke, alcohol and drug free event. It is an opportunity for all people, regardless of culture, background or age to come together, to share and celebrate the richness of Māori culture. Over four days, audiences can witness the best kapa haka in the world, taste Māori and local southern delicacies, shop for Māori arts and crafts and experience cultural exhibitions and workshops. Under 5 Fest 2015

A special event for young children with over 40 hands-on science exhibits and activities. Come and learn, play, discover alongside your child. Children’s Puppet Workshop

7th March  // 10am – 12.30pm // The Gym at the Arts Centre, Worcester Boulevard

Whole House Reuse and Free Theatre Christchurch have come together to present a unique children’s puppet workshop, creating puppets out of the salvaged materials of a red-zoned Christchurch home. In this workshop, children will explore techniques of animation and puppetry, and will construct their own puppets as part of the Whole House Reuse Project.These puppets will be displayed alongside the other creations made for Whole House Reuse in a large-scale exhibition at the Canterbury Museum from 5th June – 23rd August 2015. Culture Galore

Culture Galore …dance to the beat of a different drum…Experience the world and celebrate cultural diversity. Be entertained by over 50 cultural performances and demonstrations, sample some of the appetising ethnic cuisines or get involved in some arts and crafts. There are plenty of fun activities for all ages including bouncy castles, rock climbing, face painting, stone and soap carving. Nostalgia Festival

7th March  // 12:30 – 7pm // Ferrymead Heritage Park

Nostalgia is a day long independent food and music festival situated inside the 1900’s replica township of the Ferrymead Heritage Park. Explore the vintage festival environment celebrating a culture full of pop cuisine, craft beer, wine, market stalls and art, all while some of New Zealand’s finest indie musicians provide entertainment from centre stage. The Heritage Park will provide a perfect distraction for the kids (free for under 12 year olds) with the steam train running throughout the day and all the park’s usual features to entertain.  While exploring the park you will also uncover a boutique market featuring a range of stalls from art and crafts to clothing and jewelers. Lincoln’ Summer Fete

7th March  // 10am – 1pm // on green beside Hillyers Cafe, Gerald Street, Lincoln

Join in the fun of this traditional country fete held in the picturesque township of Lincoln. There will be something for everyone with competitions open to the whole family – Full details can be found on www.facebook.com/lincolnmarket with entries registered on the day between 9.30 and 10.30. Prize giving at midday. Christchurch based Natural Magic will be on hand with their ever popular Puppet Show and live Ukulele Music. To keep the children entertained all morning there will also be a whole host of traditional children’s games and a Bouncy Castle. Delectable food stalls and a wide range of genuine locally grown, spray free vegetables, award winning produce, cheeses, wine and exquisite craft stalls. An event not to be missed!

 

Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza

8th March  // 10:30am // Canterbury Agricultural Park

A great family day out, the Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza will showcase a variety of vehicles from all eras – something for all to enjoy! Car enthusiasts and owners are invited to showcase their much loved cars at Christchurch’s A&P Showgrounds – from classic, vintage, veteran to modern day cars, sports cars and more.  All makes, models, types, shapes, styles and ages are welcome – if it has wheels, bring it!  Music entertainment throughout day; Food and refreshments available; Great family day out – all welcome! Entry Fee $15 per display & per spectator vehicle – proceeds to the Child Cancer Foundation. Gates open at 10:30am to both the public and those keen to display their cars.  Judging starts at 11:30am, with a prizegiving held later in the day. LYFE (Linwood Youth Festival Experience) 2015

Spectrum Street Art Festival

Featuring: The largest Banksy collection in the southern hemisphere. Who: Cope 2, Sofles, Adnate, Owen Dippie, Flox, Buff Monster, Dcypher & Jacob Yikes. Admission is free, and there are rumored giant spray cans adorning the venue, customized by selected artists.
