For the past 21 years, the Script World Buskers Festival has aimed to stretch its wings to present the people of Christchurch with the best buskers festival in the world. The 2014  Script World Buskers Festival promises to carry on the tradition by offering a programme of events that showcases the very best of the best! We’ve enlisted fifty-five amazing street performers, comedians, fringe artists, musicians and visual artists that are destined to leave you mesmerised and in awe. Whether you’re a fan of highly skilled acrobatics, hoola-hoopers, trapeze artists, musicians, dancers, circus and vaudeville skits, burlesque or you’re simply out for a good belly laugh – we’ve got it all! Jack, The Giant and The Jiggery Plot

Elmwood Players’ Children’s Theatre returns again in 2014 with a twist on a classic fairy tale, “Jack, the Giant and the Jiggery Plot”. In a land terrorized by a fearsome giant, the Prime Minister and the General hatch a jiggery plot to appease the giant’s appetite, and become rulers of the land at the same time. The dimwitted Jack, son of Mrs Wigglebottom (a.k.a the old  woman who lived in a shoe) becomes an unwitting accomplice in their plan to kidnap the princess and give her to the giant. I Hate Children Children’s Show

Dangerous comedy and magic for teens, tweens and adventurous moms. For parents who love kids but hate bad magic. Bad Boy Magician Paul Nathan performs for royalty, heads of state, TV and films. He lost a bet and had to do a children’s show. Surprisingly it was a hit. So now Paul is bringing the show to the Scirt World Buskers Festival to ride that kiddy-kash-kow all the way to the banky bank. $5/$10 donation per seat: $10.00. Summer of Fun – West Melton

The small community of West Melton welcomes all to its family fun day. Games, activities, stalls, food and music are here to be enjoyed for all ages and families! Summer of Fun Family Evening Picnic – West Melton

CPIT’s Community Open Day

Come along with friends and family to CPIT’s Community Open Day. It’ll be a great day out for you and the kids with fun activities and entertainment for all to enjoy. The activities will include: ‘Master the Pasta’ where our cookery tutors will teach you how to make delicious fettucine; Science under the microscope – experience some ‘weird’ science as well as take a tour of our science labs; Get in the groove with Latin drumming experience Bouncy castle for the kids; Pit Stop challenge – see how fast you can change a tyre in our automotive workshops and much more…  If you are thinking about studying in 2014 – we will have tutors onsite to talk to you about your study options at CPIT or if you are already enrolled come and find out about all you need to know about where everything is and where you can get a bite to eat or your daily caffeine fix. Streets Kite Day

New Brighton beach, South of the Pier

A coastal sky filled with popping colour and fluttering shapes – Streets Kite Day has become a beloved event on the Christchurch calendar. Kites of all shapes, sizes and colours dip and dive in the New Brighton sky, to the delight of thousands who flock to the beach to watch and take part. Kite fliers travel from around the country, and around the world, for this vibrant event. This year’s Kite Day promises to be as impressive as ever, with a stunning showcase of box kites. Bring along your own kite and add to the visual symphony. Or simply settle in and gaze at the spectacular sight above. Streets Kite Day offers a great family afternoon out. So bring a rug and picnic. Pack togs and towel. Grab a fistful of ice creams, or some fish and chips and make the most of this international event on our doorstep. Try and head along early, or catch a bus to save yourself the hassle of parking. And don’t forget to pack sunscreen and hats for a sun-smart afternoon at the beach. Ingham Lazy Sundays – Jed & Hera

From Iceland to Texas, Hera has been rocking the world with her gold record and support acts for Jo Cocker and Nick Cave. She’s done festivals like SXSW in Texas and Glastonbury in England, but always returns to New Zealand, her adopted home. Jed was in rock band House of Mountain backing Hera when they discovered their great musical connection. Experience their cool, celtic, Icelandic chemistry on-stage at the Botanic Gardens. Live at the Point

Diamond Harbour Presents – Live at the Point Music each Sunday on the grounds of Godley House (Rugby Clubrooms if wet) 1-4pm The series was set up three years ago to provide locals and visitors a place to come and listen to some great music after the beautiful Godley House fell in the Canterbury earthquakes. Set in the grounds of the old homestead overlooking Lyttelton Harbour, the venue is perfect for a sunny Sunday afternoon picnic with friends and family and great local music. Take a cruise on the ferry from Lyttelton or a stunning car trip out to Diamond Harbour to hear music each Sunday from Dec 29 2013 right through to February 23rd 2014. ASB Classical Sparks

Public access from all areas of North Hagley Park. Car parking available on rugby fields, with entrance off Riccarton Avenue. This will be well signposted. $3 parking charge.  stponed to Sunday 2 February if wet. The city will be filled with a symphony of sparkles, space and stars in this year’s ASB Classical Sparks. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will be joined by New Zealand’s own ‘Queens of Comedy’ The Topp Twins, for what is guaranteed to be an evening packed with laughs, music and pyrotechnics. Navy Warship Open to the Public

2nd February // 10am – 3pm
Lyttleton Port of Christchurch, Norwich Quay, Lyttelton

Members of the public are warmly invited to come down and visit the ship. At the Lyttelton Port, the crew of Canterbury will be ready to welcome you onboard, so why not make the most of this chance to see New Zealand’s Navy in action! Since commissioning into RNZN service on 12 June 2007 in Melbourne, the ship has been a familiar sight in Christchurch, most recently supporting the NZ Defence Force exercise Southern Katipo in November 2013. HMNZS Canterbury provides amphibious sealift and logisitics support to carry soldiers, fuel and supplies globally.
